How to Choose a RuneScape Private Server (RSPS Guide)

SpawnTrack·14 May 2026· 7 min read

Eco vs spawn, the base revision, custom vs near-official and the gambling trap — how to pick an RSPS worth playing instead of one that resets next week.

RuneScape private servers (RSPS) are one of the biggest private-server scenes anywhere, and they vary enormously — from faithful Old School recreations to wildly custom servers with their own bosses and items. Here’s how to choose one that’ll still be online in a few months.

1. Eco vs spawn server

This is the defining RSPS choice. A spawn server lets you spawn items and gear for free, so it’s all about PvP and combat with no economy. An eco server has a real economy — you earn and trade for everything, like the official game. Decide which you want first; they’re completely different experiences.

2. The base / revision

  • OSRS-like (Old School): the most popular base today, recreating Old School RuneScape.
  • Pre-EoC / 317 / 474: classic RuneScape eras, hugely nostalgic.
  • RS3-like: the modern game with the EoC combat system.

Pick the era you actually want to play; OSRS-style servers currently have the biggest populations.

3. Custom vs near-official

Some RSPS replicate the official game closely; others add custom bosses, zones, items and skills. Custom can be fantastic or an unbalanced mess — read recent reviews and play the tutorial and first hour to judge.

4. The gambling and pay-to-win trap

Two things kill RSPS communities: aggressive pay-to-win donor shops (selling best-in-slot gear and overpowered perks) and unregulated in-game gambling/dicing that wrecks the economy and scams players. Favour servers with a fair donor model — cosmetics, conveniences, modest perks — and clear rules around gambling.

5. Population, uptime and the team

RSPS come and go fast. Check the real online count, how long the server has run, and whether the team ships updates and protects against DDoS and dupes. An active Discord with real patch notes is a strong green flag.

Play the first hour before you commit. Whether it’s eco or spawn, near-official or custom, you’ll feel the quality, the population and the donor pressure immediately — far faster than trusting the toplist blurb.

Frequently asked questions

What is an eco vs a spawn RSPS?

A spawn server lets you spawn items for free and focuses on PvP/combat; an eco server has a real economy where you earn and trade everything, like the official game. They’re completely different styles.

Which RuneScape revision is most popular?

OSRS-like (Old School) servers currently have the biggest RSPS populations. Pre-EoC and 317-era servers remain popular for nostalgia, and RS3-like servers run the modern EoC combat.

How do I avoid a pay-to-win RSPS?

Check the donor store before playing. If it sells best-in-slot gear or overpowered perks, it’s pay-to-win. Cosmetics, conveniences and modest boosts only — plus clear gambling rules — are the healthy signs.
