How to Set Up a Counter-Strike 1.6 Server (and Fill It)
Counter-Strike 1.6 still pulls huge numbers in many regions. Here’s how to run a modern, stable 1.6 server with ReHLDS, AMX Mod X and the plugins that keep it full.
Counter-Strike 1.6 is two decades old and still wildly popular — especially across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. A well-run 1.6 server is cheap, light and easy to fill. Here’s the modern way to set one up: ReHLDS instead of the ancient HLDS, plus the plugin stack that defines a 1.6 community.
What you need
- A small Linux VPS — 1.6 is featherweight; 1–2 vCPU and 1 GB RAM run a full 32-slot server.
- SteamCMD to download the Half-Life dedicated server (app 90).
- Port 27015 UDP/TCP open.
- ReHLDS (a modern, optimized HLDS replacement), plus Metamod-r and AMX Mod X.
Step 1 — Install the base server
Use SteamCMD to install app 90 (the HLDS / Counter-Strike files). Once it’s down, you have a vanilla 1.6 server — but vanilla is missing the admin tools and plugins every real community runs, so don’t stop here.
Step 2 — Swap in ReHLDS
ReHLDS is a drop-in, optimized rewrite of the original engine binary: better performance, fewer exploits and active maintenance. Replace the stock engine files with ReHLDS — it’s the single biggest upgrade for a modern 1.6 server and the standard the community expects.
Step 3 — Add Metamod-r and AMX Mod X
Metamod-r loads server plugins; AMX Mod X is the admin and plugin framework that 1.6 runs on. Together they give you admin commands, map voting, stats, and thousands of community plugins. Install Metamod-r first, then AMX Mod X on top, and set your admins in the config.
Step 4 — Configure server.cfg and maps
- Set hostname, rcon_password and sv_password (if private) in server.cfg.
- Choose your mapcycle — de_dust2 carries most public servers, but a good rotation keeps it fresh.
- Pick your identity: classic public, GunGame, Deathmatch, CSDM, Zombie Plague, or surf. Say it in the hostname.
Don’t drown a new server in plugins. A clean public or one strong mod (Zombie Plague and GunGame are perennial crowd-pullers) beats a server stuffed with conflicting plugins that lag and crash.
Step 5 — Get players
A 1.6 server fills fast if people can find it. List it so it appears in the CS 1.6 ranking, keep it online 24/7, run a Discord, and ask players to vote — in the 1.6 scene a good toplist rank and a clear identity fill a server quickly.
