How to Set Up a DayZ Server (and Customize the Loot)
From a clean DayZ install to tuned loot, mods and a populated map — the practical setup that turns an empty server into a community.
A custom DayZ server is where the game gets interesting — your loot economy, your mods, your rules. Here’s how to stand one up and shape it without breaking the central economy that makes DayZ tick.
What you need
- A Linux or Windows box; ~6–8 GB RAM and a fast CPU handle a standard Chernarus server.
- SteamCMD and the DayZ server app (223350); mods come from the Steam Workshop.
- Ports 2302–2306 UDP open.
- The server files plus any map beyond Chernarus (Livonia, Namalsk, etc.).
Step 1 — Install and first boot
Use SteamCMD to download app 223350, set serverDZ.cfg (hostname, max players, password), and launch once. The first boot generates the storage and central-economy folders you’ll be tuning.
Step 2 — Understand the central economy (CE)
DayZ’s loot isn’t random scatter — it’s driven by the central-economy XML files (types.xml and friends) that control what spawns, how much, and how often it refreshes. This is the most important system to learn; almost every “loot feels wrong” complaint traces back to it.
Step 3 — Tune loot in types.xml
- nominal — how many of an item exist on the map at once.
- min — the floor that triggers respawns.
- lifetime — how long an untouched item persists before despawning.
- restock and cost — the pacing of how items return.
Change a few values at a time and test. The CE is interdependent — cranking every nominal up at once floods the map, kills the survival tension, and can hurt performance.
Step 4 — Add mods
Workshop mods (quality-of-life, trader systems, new weapons, maps) load via the launch parameters and a keys folder. Add them one at a time — a mismatched or out-of-date mod is the usual reason a server won’t start.
Step 5 — Fill the server
List it so survivors find it in the DayZ ranking, state your identity in the name (vanilla+, hardcore, high-loot RP), and run a Discord. Persistence and a clear identity keep players coming back across wipes.

Frequently asked questions
What is types.xml in DayZ?
It’s the central-economy file that controls loot: how many of each item spawn, the minimum before respawn, and how long items persist. It’s the main tool for customizing loot.
How much RAM for a DayZ server?
Around 6–8 GB for a standard Chernarus server. CPU single-thread speed matters as much as RAM for smooth simulation.
Why won’t my modded server start?
Almost always a mod that’s out of date or mismatched between server and client, or a missing bikey. Add mods one at a time so you can spot the offender.
